Boston Taxis
Getting around a new city can take some getting used, which can be hard if you’ve only got a couple of days. Luckily, Boston taxi drivers know the city like the back of their hand.
Some Boston Taxi Trivia
Just like in London, Boston Taxis have been historically referred to as Hackney Carriages. Taxis in Boston don’t always look like a minicab but still bear the same name. The Inspector of Carriages from the Boston Police Department oversees the running of all cabs and taxis in Boston and has done so since the department was introduced in 1854.
Have a Safe Ride
In Boston, cabs display a medallion to show that they are registered as a legal Hackney Carriage that is allowed to pick up passengers. Check that the medallion is on display and that the driver has their ID available to see before getting into the cab.
Catching a Lift
Generally, you can hail a taxi from any significant street corner in Boston. Just stand close to the road, watch out for other cars and stick your arm out when you see a taxi coming towards you. Alternatively, if you do not feel confident with standing on the road, and trying to get a driver to notice you waving frantically, you can call for a cab.
If you’re staying in a hotel, ask at reception about which taxi firm they use most often and take a card. If you’re leaving a restaurant or venue, the maitre d’ or concierge to should be able to call a cab on your behalf.
Taxi Tip
If it’s your first time in Boston, or any city, carry a card from the hotel you are staying in to show to your driver. If you’re staying in a private apartment or with friend, take the full address with you wherever you go. That way you’ll still get home safely no matter where you are, and your driver can always get you where you need to go.
Paying for your Journey
Boston taxis are traditionally a cash only service. A few companies, though, are now able to accept card payments, which is great if you’re not sure how much your taxi will cost.
It might be worth noting that in 2009, Boston was reported as having the most expensive taxis of any major city in the US. The minimum spend for any taxi ride will be around $7 that includes the starting fare. For most normal rides within the centre of the city, you should expect to pay around $20 - $25.
For longer rides, like a ride out to the airport, factor in a cost of around $80. With longer taxi rides, the passenger is expected to pay all road and bridge toll charges.
Registered Taxi Ranks in Boston
There are tons if taxi providers in Boston but only Hackney carriages are allowed to pick on the street, the rest are private hire only. Some registered Hackney Carriage providers in Boston include Top Cab, Tunnel Taxi, and Metro Cab. There are plenty of them around on the street so finding one shouldn’t be so easy.
There are also some taxis ranks dotted around the city as at main stations, and at the airport.
