Boston Bus System

Buses are buses right? Wrong. Make sure you know how to make changes, stop a bus and which service to use by getting to grips with the Boston bus system.

About the Boston Bus System

Boston’s local bus service is ran and overseen by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), sometimes known locally as the T. Like in most cities, the Boston Bus System runs services to places where trains, trams, trolleys, and subway services do not run. They are always a good option for getting out to the suburbs.

The Boston Bus System mainly consists of City buses and Silver Line buses. City buses tend to run services from all subway and rail stations as well as from outside of most public spaces and attractions. Silver Line buses run a more refined service between downtown Boston and South Boston including Roxbury. Silver Line runs a very convenient service which runs direct between Boston South Station and Logan Airport.

Using Boston City Bus System

City Buses in Boston are easy to use. There are stops at most major attractions and outside of subway stations. Each Boston City Bus stop will have a timetable so you know which bus to get on and what time it is due. It is worth knowing that city buses in Boston do run on time, so try to get to your bus stop a few minutes early if you have planned your route.

If you do miss the bus you need there’s no need to worry—buses run regularly in Boston. At most city centre bus stops the bus will stop automatically. If you’re at a stop in the suburbs you’ll need to put out your hand out to let the driver know that you want him to stop.

Paying for Boston Bus Service Journeys

It is possible to buy a ticket from the driver on Boston City Bus services. Bus fares for Boston buses are a charged at a standard rate, not in accordance with the distance of your journey. Inner Express services cost a little more and Outer Express tickets cost more still.

A cheaper option for travel of the Boston Bus Service is to buy a Charlie Card from any station including Logan Airport. The card allows passengers to scan themselves onto buses and the trip will be charged at a reduced rate of 20%.

Connections from South Station Boston

From South Station there are direct connections to both of Boston’s other main stations, Back Bay Station and Rte. 128. Direct access is available on local train lines. Use either the Franklin line or the Haverhill Line to reach other stations.

Around Boston South Station

The station is well located for day visitors and leisure visitors as it is located close to many of Boston’s most visited attractions. Within walking distance of the station, attractions include Boston’s Chinatown, Boston Tea Party and Ships Museum, Boston Children’s Museum, and the Institution of Contemporary Art.

Route 128 Station Boston

This station is best for Boston visitors who need easy access to the western and southern suburbs. It is located approximately 12km from downtown Boston. Route 128 Station is serviced by MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) commuter trains. Trains by MBTA run as far south as Warwick and Rhode Island. To the north, they run up to Newburyport. This station has daily services to stations in New York City, and Washington D.C.
