Boston Common is a park located in downtown central Boston. From green lawns to ice skating rinks, Boston Common has something for everyone year round. The park’s convenient downtown location along with its beautiful scenery makes Boston Common a must see on any trip to Bean Town.

History of Boston Common

While it is hard to imagine that a park that now stands in the center of a large metropolitan city was once pasture for grazing, imagining this is the key to understanding the history behind Boston Common. Boston Common dates back to the 1600s when Puritan settlers lived and farmed in Boston.

The park also played an important role in the Revolutionary War. British soldiers camped out in Boston Common for many years during the war. Upon the United States victory, George Washington went to Boston Common to celebrate independence.

The park has gone on to fight for and celebrate many other victories. It was a common place for protests during the 20th century, and Martin Luther King Jr. once gave a speech there. The park continues to be a place citizens of Boston to gather and enjoy the greenery in the middle of the city.

The Frog Pond

The Frog Pond is area inside of the park that is full of fun for the whole family. During the summer, the Frog Pond is home to carousel rides, and occasionally, yoga classes are hosted on nearby lawns. During the late fall and winter the Frog Pond becomes a popular destination for ice skating. You can rent skates and take lessons, or just go for a spin around this pond located right in Boston Common. There is a Cafe located at the Frog Pond year round.

The Boston Public Gardens

The Boston Public Gardens, started in 1837, are America's first ever botanic gardens. The Public Garden, adjacent to Boston Common, is full of beautiful flowers and lovely paths to walk down. If you get tired of walking through the Gardens, try taking a Swan Boat ride through the lake. Swan Boats have been a part of the public gardens since the 1870s.

Monuments at Boston Common

There are several historical monuments near or within the famous Boston Common. There are two Civil War monuments in the park, The Soldiers and Sailors Monument and the Robert Gould Shaw memorial. The Brewer fountain, which has French roots, is also a popular sight inside the park.

Restaurants near Boston Common

Boston Common’s central location puts you right in the middle of everything, including some of Boston’s best restaurants. For a contemporary Italian meal just off the park try Teatro. Here you can get pizza, pasta or seafood in an upscale environment. For a more causal environment and some great food try Four Burgers. This restaurant prides itself on the quality beef that goes into their burgers, and offers up vegetarian friendly options such as black bean and salmon burgers.
