Shopping Areas in Boston

Shopping in Boston is a popular activity for tourists visiting this historic city. With so many diverse areas, different types of shops, and ambiance, it’s easy to find a place that will suit each individual. There is a wide range of different types of shopping experiences from which to choose. Visitors will find both indoor and outdoor venues, high-end boutique, retail, and trinket shopping as they explore the shopping areas of Boston.

Downtown Crossing

The walking-only pedestrian mall of Downtown Crossing is one of Boston’s oldest shopping areas. This short stretch of walking street exudes the charm of rustic architecture and a cozy, community feel. Shoppers have the option to peruse the many larger retail stores located on this outdoor mall as well as other well-known chains. Thrown into the mix with these larger department stores you will find just as many locally owned, independent shops offering clothes and accessories. Also adding to the charm of the area are the book stores and antique shops that dot the walkway, offering a different type of shopping experience.

Faneuil Hall Marketplace

Faneuil Hall Marketplace is home to restored buildings, street performers, famous food stalls, and a large amount of shopping pushcarts as well as storefronts. This shopping center is comprised of three main buildings, including Quincy Market, centered on a common outdoor area, creating a unique indoor and outdoor experience for shoppers. Larger retail shops reside inside the North and South buildings, while art, trinkets, and souvenirs can be found along the outside of the buildings and in the main plaza. However, shopping is just one of the many attractions that bring visitors to this area. Visitors also come to enjoy the culture and museums located in the area.

Newbury Street

Newbury Street, located in the Back Bay area of the city by walking promenades and business districts, is known for its more high fashion shopping and sidewalks riddled with local and brand name boutiques alike. Big names such as Tiffany jewelry, Gucci, Armani, or Saks Fifth Avenue can be found here, though more local apparel boutiques are also prevalent. Newbury Street also includes cafes, bistros, and many art galleries, making the eight-block street a favorite among visitors to experience. Though this Boston shopping area may be pricier than others, a simple stroll accompanied by window shopping and people watching is a popular activity for Newbury.

South End

The South End area of Boston offers a much different perspective than you will likely find anywhere else in the city of Boston. Here, a hipper, more quirky crowd roams the streets. The South End has focuses less on more commercial shopping offered in other areas of Boston, and features a number of odd shops, art galleries, and trendy places to rest and eat. The laid back attitude of the South End makes this Boston shopping area popular for tourists.

These popular shopping areas can be quite spread out form one another, so those looking to spend an entire day shopping will want to study Boston’s public transportation system. The shopping areas of Boston each offer a different vibe and mood from the next, making shopping in Boston a favorite activity among locals and tourists.
