What Museums are good for Kids in Boston?
Boston’s Museum of Science can provide hours of educational fun for the whole family. The museum has many exciting exhibitions as well as a planetarium, an IMAX theater, and a butterfly garden. If you get hungry during your day of investigation, stop by the museum’s Riverview Café for a bite to eat. Looking for something geared especially towards the kids? Look no further than the Boston Children’s Museum. With over 19 hands-on exhibits, the Boston Children’s Museum is sure to have something the whole family can enjoy. If you are traveling with older children, the Museum of Fine Arts is a great way to check some contemporary art, as well as possible interactive events.
The Frog Pond
Located in Boston Commons, The Frog Pond is a public park that can be enjoyed year round. During the warmer months, a carousel opens in the middle of the park, while during the winter, the pond turns into an ice skating rink.. And no matter what the weather is, you can always enjoy a snack from The Frog Pond Café.
Activities on the Charles River
Getting out and enjoying all that the Charles River has to offer is a great way to experience Boston. The Charles River runs throught the city, providing stunning views and relaxing parks. Stroll along the riverbank and to see some of Boston’s most famous college campuses such as Harvard and MIT. Boston Harbor is filled with small islands, such as Spectacle Island, where the whole family can swim, hike, and enjoy the beautiful scenery. If the weather isn’t right for swimming, try a world famous Boston Duck Tour. Even with three starting points throughout the city, it is advised that you purchase tickets in advance. You must buy tickets for all children, even if they plan to sit on your lap. Tours are open year round, but be sure to dress warmly if you are going in the winter.
Historical Activities around Boston
Boston’s Freedom Trail tour offers families a wonderful learning experience. You can pick up a map and take the self guided tour to some of Boston’s most famous sites. Spend an entire day meandering your way around the city, or break the tour up into shorter, more manageable sections. If travelling with young children, it is important to note that the trail is over 2 miles long, and can be cold during the wintertime. Don’t forget to stop at one of the tour’s most famous sites, Faneuil Hall. Dating back to 1742, Faneuil is a wonderful mix of modern amenities and rich history, as well as a great place to have a meal and stock up on souvenirs.
The New England Aquarium
The New England Aquarium, centrally located on Central Wharf in downtown Boston, is one of the locations at which you can start the Boston Duck Tour. Along with the memorable main aquarium, you can add on a whale watching experience or visit the IMAX theater for an additional fee.
Sports in Boston
No trip to Boston would be complete without experiencing some of Boston’s sporting culture. Only a short drive away from the city is Gillette Stadium, home to both the New England Patriots football team and the Revolution Soccer team. Located within the city itself is Fenway Park, home to the world famous Boston Red Sox. It is important to buy tickets to Fenway Park early, as games often sell out. The Red Sox are not the only world champions in Boston. Both the Celtics and the Bruins play at the TD Garden. With 5 major sports teams, Boston is sure to provide plenty of opportunities to see amazing athletes.
