The Paradise Rock Club

The Paradise Rock Club, located on in the trendy Allston neighborhood on Commonwealth Avenue, has been operating in Boston continuously since the 1970s. The Paradise books everything from up-and-comers to established acts, and every genre from hip hop, rock, and pop to metal and country.

The Paradise Rock Club

The Paradise Rock Club, one of the most well-known music venues in Boston, is a midsized, warehouse-style performance space. Renovated in 2010, the ‘Dise features a small raised stage with plenty of open space for general admission concert-goers to get a good spot. There is also a second floor balcony that runs around the entire room and provides a great vantage point to see the stage.  There are two fully stocked bars on the ground floor, and another smaller bar located on the second level.

While a contemporary-music venue scene might not be an ordinary stop on your historical tour of the city, the ‘Dise has been a major part of Boston culture for decades.  Opened in 1977, the Paradise has hosted legends such as R.E.M., The Police, and U2, who played their first ever United States show here.  With a capacity of 904, the Paradise is a relatively major venue for the area, and draws crowds from near and far.

In addition to seeing a show at the Paradise Rock Club, you could check out the Front Lounge – a separate area in the front of the venue that is open even when concerts aren’t on. Music, food, drinks, and four flat screen TVs make it a great place to hang out and experience the legendary Paradise.

Concerts at the Paradise Rock Club

While the Paradise mainly books national or well-known local acts, the club often tries to squeeze in a few under-the-radar local musicians. However, the ‘Dise’s management actually requires bands and artists to have a big enough following to have sold out smaller Boston venues (such as the Brighton Music Hall or the Middle East Downstairs) in order to be eligible to play. But the variety is still there – the venue seeks out independently signed acts in every genre from country and punk to metal, pop, and soul.

Most concerts are general admission and only for those over 18-years-old. Tickets can run between $15 and $30 depending on the act and the time of year. There are weekday and weekend shows, the number of which varies seasonally.

Getting There

The Paradise is located at 967 Commonwealth Avenue, just off the west end of the Boston University campus.  Take the Green Line of the T towards Boston College, and get off at the Pleasant Street stop.
