Mottley's Comedy Club
Boston and comedy have a long history together. Since the 1980’s, clubs like Mottley’s have been contributing the comedy scene, making Boston one of the hottest spots for up-and-coming comedians on the East Coast. Mottley’s Comedy Club is a popular example of how when old school jokes meet new school humor, everyone leaves in laughter. Self-labeled a “comedy revolution,” Mottley’s Comedy Club is a cozy space that features comedic legends as well as acts by new artists.
Mottley’s Comedy Club is a cultural staple in Boston. Acts vary from seasoned comedic veterans to newbies looking to make their start. The club made Boston Magazine’s Best of 2010 list and the Boston Phoenix called them the Best Comedy Club in 2009.
What’s in a Name?
Mottley’s Comedy Club got its name from a book of jokes written by John Mottley in the 18th century in Egnland. Mottley claimed the book to be a compilation of jokes by the then-famous comedian, Joe Miller. While most of these jokes are now over-used and out of date, the club is still proud to bare Mottley’s name.
The Space
Located at 61 Chatham Street, Mottley’s Comedy Club is set in the basement of Trinity Bar (near Faneuil Hall), where you can wine and dine as you laugh your way through a comedy show. Reservations are accepted, but feel free to be spontaneous and drop in when you’re in need of a good laugh. The space is tight and cozy, seating about 100, which makes the audience interaction with comedians that much more intimate.
The Comedy
Mottley’s Comedy Club prides itself on diversity – not just in the type of artists who are in the lineup, but in the type of comedy they display. Standup comedians, sketch comedy, old school legends, and funny up and comers are all welcome at Mottley’s Comedy Club. All shows cater to the 21 and over audience, so no kids allowed.
The club, a self-proclaimed “comedy revolution,” aims to bring new and old comedy styles together, making the acts accessible to those of all age groups. While the popular venue is sure to host some of the country’s most famous funny people, be sure to check it out on a night featuring a newbie.
One thing’s for sure – the laughs keep on coming at Mottley’s Comedy Club!
Getting There
