Soprafina Gallery
The Soprafina Gallery
The Soprafina Gallery opened its doors for the first time in 2001, and is owned by Frank Roselli and Ann Gallagher, who are married. The space is open and airy and the clean, white lines of the interior design make it an inviting and contemporary environment to take in the latest exhibition. The Gallery specializes in contemporary paintings, but also shows exhibitions that include paper drawings and sculpture. Exhibitions change frequently, with around 10 different artists showcased per year. The gallery is opened from Wednesday to Saturday, and admission is free.
An Intimate Gallery Experience
A little off the beaten path on 55 Thayer Street, the Soprafina Gallery is tucked away on this side street off the bustling Harrison Avenue. If you’re looking for a quiet moment or a break from the popular tourist sights and museums, walk around the corner to tiny Soprafina and get lost in the latest exhibition.
Where is the Soprafina
The Soprafina Gallery is located in the vibrant, artsy South End. One of the most diverse and chic neighborhoods in Boston, it houses artist studios and ethnic restaurants, acts as a stage for fashionable trendsetters, and boasts a laid back atmosphere where everyone feels at home. The art district, referred to as the SoWa district, is concentrated on Harrison Avenue and its side streets.
If you make it out to the South End for the artwork, don’t leave without sitting down for a meal in the neighborhood, a mecca for the best ethnic food in Boston. The best Boston restaurants are located a few blocks north of Harrison on Washington and Tremont Streets. Try the Vietnamese cooking at Ginger Park or the Japanese cuisine at Oishii Boston on nearby Washington Street. If you’re really feeling brave and willing to eat with your fingers, try the Ethiopian food at Addis Red Sea on Tremont.
Art Events
The “First Friday” event on Boston’s Harrison Avenue is extremely popular, just as it is in other cities all over the country. On the first Friday of each month, Harrison Avenue’s 15 art galleries and over 50 artist studios are opened to the public during the evening. Art galleries and studios throughout the art district open their doors for visitors, and serious as well as casual art lovers wander up and down the sidewalks, taking in the new exhibitions and chatting with the artists.
If you’re visiting Boston during the first Friday of the month, this is a great opportunity to get a feel for the art scene in Boston and spend an evening exploring the colorful South End. A concentration of studios is located at 450 Harrison Avenue, but the avenue is also lined with a variety of galleries and studios.
Check the Soprafina Gallery website for news on upcoming exhibitions and monthly calendars announcing receptions to be hosted by the exhibited artist. The gallery also organizes artist talks to create a dialogue between the artist and the gallery visitors. All events are open to the public.
