Barbara Krakow Gallery

The Barbra Krakow Gallery

The Barbara Krakow Gallery is one of the oldest continuously running art galleries in Boston. It opened its doors in 1963 and has been operating at its current gallery space at 10 Newbury Street since 1983. The space is tiny, but the owner’s ambitions and the conceptually-based exhibitions she curates are enormous in their contribution to the small but significant art scene in Boston. The owner likes to be around as much as possible to talk to visitors about their impressions and to get ideas for future exhibitions. The gallery primarily showcases modern and contemporary art in many mediums, including paintings, photographs, drawings, prints, and sculpture.

The Atmosphere

Located on attractive, tree-lined Newbury Street, the gallery blends right into the red brick of the well-groomed Back Bay neighborhood. The space is small and intimate, full eye-catching exhibitions inside.

Barbara notoriously likes to display exhibitions that pull in the viewer—that force them to think and make judgments instead of passively taking in the art. This tone makes the Barbara Krakow Gallery a great gallery to visit with a group of friends. You’ll be dying to have someone around to discuss these alternative and sometimes wacky installations with.

Where is the Barbra Krakow Gallery?

You can easily make a day of exploring the Back Bay neighborhood. Newbury Street is one of the chicest shopping districts in Boston, and after visiting the gallery, you’ll be surrounded by an assortment of other galleries, boutique shopping, and fine restaurants. Walk down the street to visit Newbury Fine Arts at 29 Newbury, spend the afternoon shopping the swanky boutiques, or treat yourself to a meal at one of Boston’s best restaurants. Try the Sushi at Umai Sushi, the French cuisine at Sonsie Restaurant, or the Italian at Ciao Bella. All of these Boston restaurants are on Newbury Street and come highly recommended.

Conceptual Art at the Gallery

Conceptual art is distinct in its desire to convey an idea or concept in an emotionally effect way instead of focusing solely on the beauty of the piece. It seeks to convey a message rather than be aesthetically pleasing. The effect can be jarring, but visitors to the Barbara Krakow Gallery should expect an atypical, yet enjoyable, gallery experience.

The Address Book at Barbara Krakow Gallery

One of the Barbara Krakow Gallery’s most famous conceptual installations was created by artist, Sophie Calle. Entitled The Address Book, Calle found a lost address book on the street in Paris and began to contact the people in book. She used the information people gave her about the book’s owner to create an intimate profile of a man she had never met, and turned his life into an art installation consisting of photographs and print. Her work was published in a French newspaper and displayed in art galleries all over the world. The owner of the book eventually discovered himself in her work, and considered it an invasion of privacy.

Tone of Exhibits at the Barbra Krakow Gallery

Calle’s work and exhibitions like it often make viewers uncomfortable and force them to make judgments on the extent to which extremely private topics can be transformed into artwork. In this sense, the viewer plays a role in creating the art as well. This is the kind of emotional experience that Barbara Krakow aims to evoke when selecting future exhibitions for her gallery space.

Events at the Gallery

Each November and December, Barbara Krakow holds an AIDS benefit at the gallery. Artists donate pieces to the cause and all proceeds from pieces priced $350 or higher are donated to charity.

Hours of Operation

The Barbara Krakow Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5:30 pm. Admission is free.
