Boston’s Art Scene
When you’re not watching the game or checking out the scenic Boston Harbor, head to one of Boston’s many up-and-coming art museums or galleries. While Boston may not be as well-known for its art scene as major US cities such as New York and Chicago, this city can certainly hold its own in the eyes of any art enthusiast. In recent years, the Boston art scene has responded to its visitors and made a conscious effort to keep things current, fluid, yet still interesting. Head to some of Boston’s most famous museums to take in some historical or famed artworks, or take a stroll through some of the city’s smaller galleries for a peek into contemporary art culture.
Harrison Avenue
Perhaps most synonymous with the art scene in Boston, Harrison Avenue and its side streets are Boston’s art district, referred to as SoWa. Located in the bohemian and gay-friendly South End neighborhood, the streets are filled with starving artists, trendsetters, studios, and ethnic restaurants. The SoWa art district is home to over 15 galleries and 50 studios that are frequently open to the public, with a penchant for smaller, more intimate gallery spaces. Check out the Soprafina Gallery for a taste of what eclectic SoWa has to offer.
First Fridays in Boston
First Fridays are a fixture of the SoWa art district and give locals and tourists a great opportunity to get a feel for Boston art as well as the culture of the art scene. Galleries and studios open to the public every first Friday of the month from 5pm to 9pm. Art lovers wander the streets and relish the opportunity to meet artists in their studios for an informal chat about their work and the opportunity to purchase pieces in person. If you’re in town on one of these Fridays, this event is not to be missed.
Newbury Street
For a more refined glimpse into Boston’s art world, head to Newbury Street. The scene here tends to feel more established and posh than the gritty Harrison Avenue, but the art is just as diverse and thought-provoking. The well-known Barbara Krakow Gallery has the contemporary concept art market cornered. A trip to her gallery is often moving and discussion provoking, so bring a friend and dive in to the latest wacky installation.
Up the street is the exclusive Back Bay neighborhood’s beloved Newbury Fine Arts. Instituted in the 1980’s, this gallery promises commitment to educating their visitors on art and not simply displaying it. Their knowledgeable staff has become a fixture in the neighborhood. The occasional celebrity installation or appearance has solidified its position as one of the most popular and well-known contemporary art galleries in Boston.
Art at Universities in Boston
Less visited by tourists but no less touted in the Boston art scene, the art galleries at Harvard and Boston University host a variety of international, national, and regional exhibitions by art students and up and coming artists.
The gallery at Boston University specializes in 20th century art and is expertly curated by an internal staff. Exhibitions from the university’s fine arts students are often on display, as well as modern paintings, prints, and photographs by more well established national artists. A variety of gallery lectures and panel discussions hosted by artists and art scholars are open to the public.
The gallery at Harvard doubles as a museum and houses paintings, sculpture, and artifacts that range from ancient times to present day. Prints from early modern Europe and collections of Islamic art are juxtaposed against more contemporary photography exhibitions. No matter your taste, you’ll find what you’re looking for in the halls of the Harvard Art Museum.
