East Boston
Located close to Logan Airport, East Boston is often overlooked by tourists. This area has an interesting and varied history. It was once a place of luxury and relaxation for Boston's richest citizens. The islands that made up East Boston were then connected to the big city, and it became a popular shipbuilding neighborhood. Since that time, East Boston has always been considered an affordable place for immigrants from other countries to move to when they first arrive in Boston.
History
East Boston, now a populous neighborhood of the city, was once a cluster of free standing Islands. General William H. Sumner, who owned one of the Islands, began to fill in land and make these islands part of the larger city in 1833. The area then became a popular ship building yard. With a seaside location, and jobs building ships, this area quickly became a popular place for immigrants to move to. The area has been home to significant Jewish, Irish, and Italian populations over the years. The Kennedy family is considered to be the neighborhood’s most famous past-residents.
Neighborhoods
The area of East Boston is still one of the city’s main hubs for immigrant populations. These days, East Boston's citizenship consists mostly of immigrants from South and Central America. The Italian population that East Boston has become known for mostly lives in the neighborhood of Orient Heights. East Boston has spectacular views of the Boston skyline. Try the greenbelt in East Boston, or the Piers Park for a good view.
