Snow Safety in Boston
Boston during the winter months can be both frigid and trecherous. Learn some important do's and don'ts to stay safe this winter season.
Most of us have experienced snow in one way or another, whether you were born and raised in New England or like to hit the ski slopes in Colorado during the winter. But if you've never been to Boston in January or February, then you may not be ready for what's in store. Being a Beantown native, I've figured out a few simple snow safety tips to help you beat the blizzardy weather and stay on your feet (and off your rear end) the next time you're in Boston.
Do's
Layer your clothing: Go with clothing such as thermal underwear, sweaters, boots (waterproof are the best), hats, gloves and scarves. Hats (or beanies/stocking caps) are the most important because 40% of your body heat is lost through your head, so cover up!
Stay hydrated: Drink lots of water, especially if you're exerting yourself or have to travel a long distance
Stay near a warm place: If you're in the snow and cold for an extended period of time, be sure to stay close to a place you can warm up in.
Don'ts
Drink caffeinated beverages: Coffee and other caffeinated beverages will dehydrate you. Also, stay away from alcoholic beverages (especially if you're driving!), especially if you have a long ways to go
Get wet: Moisture can speed up hypothermia and wet clothing loses its ability to insulate you. So be sure to keep a dry set of clothes nearby. It's also a good idea to wear wicking material as a bottom layer if you're out in the cold and wet for an extended period of time.
Overexert yourself: Save your energy and be sure to not take "the long way" whenever possible
Driving in the Snow
When it comes to driving in the white stuff, you can never be too safe (especially if you've never been in a New England snowstorm before!). Here are some more snow safety tips for Boston drivers:
1. Make sure you have a full tank of gas, just in case.
2. Double check the tread on your tires; even if you don't have snow tires on you're going to want some kind of traction out there.
3. Make sure your headlights are working at full power.
4. Check your wiper blades and windshield fluid before heading out; and make sure you fill your reservoir with winter formula that works in temperatures below freezing (32°F).
5. Keep both a scraper and a small snow shovel in your car at all times; you'll definitely need the scraper for frost on the windows, but if you do get stuck that shovel will come in mighty handy.
One extra tip I've learned over the years: snow is a lot less slippery than slush, so avoid the wet stuff on the ground as much as possible. Boston, and New England in general, is a beautiful region to visit and the snowy weather only adds to the town's uniqueness. Don't let it ruin a good trip; just follow some of these basic snow safety tips for a Boston winter and keep your vacation a fun one (and not a wet and freezing one!).
